I purchased the Toastmaster 6203 Popcorn Popper in September 2010 for quick and comparatively healthier (vs. late night delivery or chips) snacks for myself and two other university roommates.
After purchasing, I glanced at these reviews, and was dismayed. Sure enough, the first time I turned it on, roughly 40-50% of popcorn kernels lay unpopped in the bowl, and some of these would violently pop ~5 seconds after landing in the bowl, sending kernels skittering off across the room.
Fortunately, I took a look at the Customer Reviews for other poppers on Amazon, and I discovered a method to make this item work perfectly:
1) Before putting the kernels in, turn on the popper and warm it up (without the removable popcorn scoop/lid) for roughly 45 seconds. After this, add kernels directly, and place the scoop/lid. This will basically preheat the element, to evenly heat of kernels and cause them to all start popping at approximately the same time.
2) After placing the scoop/lid, tilt the popper backwards by either pulling the built-in handle slightly, or setting the front/bottom area of the popper on something that will make it rise an inch or so (I used a box of toothpicks). This will stop any stray unpopped kernels that are released from going into the bowl, and instead force them right back down to be properly popped.
3) Lie a dishtowel on top of the popcorn popper, and overtop of the bowl. This will guide all popped kernels into the bowl. (NOTE: I did this only once, as following steps 1 and 2 made certain that all of the kernels would pop only while inside the popper. I consider it optional for those who don't mind a kernel or two on the countertop.)
By following these three instructions, I have had a 100% success rate in popping large quantities of popcorn. I consider this a worthy buy, for those who don't mind the minor coaxing this machine requires. As for the machine itself, it is the quietest popcorn maker I have ever seen, it pops corn quickly and efficiently, and you will definitely find both the cord-wrapper on the bottom as well as the Power switch on the side to be welcome conveniences.
